A new species of torrent catfish, Liobagrus hyeongsanensis (Teleostei: Siluriformes: Amblycipitidae), from Korea

Abstract: A new species of torrent catfish, Liobargus hyeongsanensis, is described from rivers and tributaries of the southeastern coast of Korea. The new species can be differentiated from its congeners by the following characteristics: a small size with a maximum standard length (SL) of 90 mm; body and fins entirely brownish-yellow without distinct markings; a relatively short pectoral spine (3.7-6.5 % SL); a reduced body-width at pectoral-fin base (15.5-17.9 % SL); 50-54 caudal-fin rays; 6-8 gill rakers; 2-3 (mostly … Show more

“…This second hypothesis can also be supported by the fact that species inhabiting the Nakdong River, such as Cobitis hankugensis (Cobitidae), Iksookimia longicorpa (Cobitidae) and Liobagrus sp. (Liobagridae), are also present in SE regional rivers 37 – 39 . Although it is known that a historical migration occurred between the Hyeongsan River (population HS) and the Nakdong River through the Yangsan Fault 40 , our data did not verify this possibility.…”

“…Furthermore, the feeding action is variable upon the size and shape, and setting of the eyes with its retinal structures by species, based on aquatic ecosystems on whether they inhabit deep or swallow waters, or bottom or surface waters, or when they are activated, the day or the night. Liobagrus mediadiposalis, a nocturnal and bottom-dwelling freshwater fish, is an endemic Korean catfish and preys on aquatic insects (Kim, 2013;Kim & Park, 2002). For the genus Liobagrus, except for ecological studies, the vision cells have been little known until now.…”

“…Genus Liobagrus inhabiting in South Korea is composed for five species, L. andersoni , L. obesus , L. mediadiposalis , L. somjinensis , and L. hyeongsanensis (Park and Kim 2010 ; Kim et al. 2015 ). Among these species, the complete mitochondrial genomes were analyzed except L. hyeongsanensis Kim et al.…”
