A new species of Tyttocharax (Characiformes: Characidae: Stevardiinae) from the Güejar river, Orinoco river Basin, Colombia

Abstract: A new Tyttocharax species from the Güejar River system, near the Macarena Mountains in Colombia is described. This is the first record for the genus from the Orinoco basin. The combination of the following characters distinguish Tyttocharax metae from its congeners: presence of bony hooks on the pectoral and caudal-fin rays; bony hooks on the anal-fin rays larger than those on the pelvic-fin rays; pectoral-fin rays i,5-6,i; presence of three unbranched dorsal-fin rays; absence of an adipose fin; four scales ro… Show more

“…Over a decade later, Costa & Le Bail (1999) added 24 Neotropical freshwater fish species to that list including four characiforms, seven siluriforms and 13 cyprinodontiforms. Since then, a great number of miniature Neotropical freshwater fishes have been discovered (e.g., Moreira, 2005;Schaefer et al, 2005;Caires & Figueiredo, 2011;Dutra et al, 2012;Román-Valencia et al, 2012;Netto-Ferreira et al, 2013a), quite a number of which were placed into new monotypic genera (e.g., Géry & Romer, 1997;Bührnheim et al, 2008;Zarske, 2010;Ribeiro et al, 2012;Netto-Ferreira et al, 2013b;Mattox et al, 2013). Since Weitzman & Vari's (1988) and Costa & Le Bail's (1999) lists, the Check List of Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America has been published , which helped to organize knowledge on Neotropical species and highlighted many miniature forms (sensu Weitzman & Vari, 1988) not included in previous lists.…”

“…The presence of these species is possibly related to processes of speciation and capture of headwaters derived from past events between the upper part of the Guaviare River basin and neighboring Amazon basins. This can be supported by the presence of some genera such as Chrysobrycon Weitzman & Menezes 1998 (Vanegas‐Rios et al, 2015), Tyttocharax Fowler 1913 (Román‐Valencia et al, 2012), and Phreatobius Goeldi 1905 (Zamudio et al, 2019), considered until recently to be typical of the Amazon basin. It also includes the rheophilic species Chaetostoma platyrhynchus Fowler 1943 that occurs in the upper Caquetá River (see photo 27 in Chindoy et al, 2019) and in the upper Guaviare River (see photo 90 in DoNascimiento et al, 2018).…”
