A new taxon of cistecephalid dicynodont from the upper Permian Kundaram Formation of India

Abstract: A new cistecephalid dicynodont, Sauroscaptor tharavati gen. et sp. nov., is described from the upper Permian Kundaram Formation of India. This taxon is represented by specimens formerly referred to the African dicynodont genera Cistecephalus and Emydops. Sauroscaptor can be distinguished from other cistecephalids by the extremely posterior position of the pineal foramen (overhanging the edge of the occiput), bipartite nuchal crest, and relatively narrow skull roof. The recognition of Sauroscaptor as a distinct… Show more

“…; Laaß ; Kammerer et al . ). Emydopoids also were geographically widespread, occurring in most major fossiliferous Permo‐Triassic basins in Gondwana (Fröbisch ), and they are one of only two major clades of dicynodonts to survive the Permo‐Triassic mass extinction (Cluver ; Hotton ; Fröbisch ; Fröbisch et al .…”

“…The fauna is dominated by small, medium and large sized dicynodonts (85.5%), followed by gorgonopsians (9.7%) and captorhinids (4.8%) (Kutty, 1972;Ray, 2000Ray, , 2001Ray and Bandyopadhyay, 2003;Kammerer et al, 2016). The recent recognition that specimens previously referred to Emydops and Cistecephalus actually represent a new cistecephalid genus (Sauroscaptor tharavati; Kammerer et al, 2016), has increased the level of endemism displayed by the Kundaram Formation assemblage.…”

“…The recent recognition that specimens previously referred to Emydops and Cistecephalus actually represent a new cistecephalid genus (Sauroscaptor tharavati; Kammerer et al, 2016), has increased the level of endemism displayed by the Kundaram Formation assemblage. A correlation with the Tropidostoma and Cistecephalus Assemblage Zones of the Karoo Basin (Fröbisch, 2009;Kurkin, 2011) has been proposed, albeit most of the taxa in the assemblage are either endemic or stratigraphically long-ranging in the Karoo, making an exact correlation difficult.…”
