A New Two Component Compression System Turning an Elastic Bandage into an Inelastic Compression Device: Interface Pressure, Stiffness, and Haemodynamic Effectiveness

Abstract: This study confirms that inelastic is much more effective than elastic compression for improving impaired venous haemodynamics. The test material can be applied with a predetermined pressure, which considerably enhances the consistency of application, and it is easily transformed into an inelastic system just by applying stiff patches without any stretch and without significantly increasing the comfortable supine pressure.

“…Inelastic materials, due to their high stiffness and low elasticity, generate high systolic pressure peaks during walking and exercise and low resting pressure [ 17 , 18 ]. Owing to such properties, inelastic compression materials are able to improve the venous pump more effectively than elastic materials [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…It consists of two components, the Lundatex ® medical bandage, which provides a safe and well-defined resting pressure owing to a cross-line indicator system, and two velcro products called PressPatch™ and FixPatch™. Adding stiff velcro products not only turns an elastic bandage into an inelastic compression device, but also enables hassle-free maintenance of target interface pressure by readjusting the FixPatch, without the need to re-bandage [ 19 , 26 ].…”

“…The LSBs have extensibility over 100% as compared to less than 100% offered by the SSBs [ 5 ]. The SSI of LSBs is low (below 10), whereas SSBs have a high SSI of over 10 [ 18 ]. The SSI measured under the layer of extremely inelastic bandage with zinc paste may be as high as 40 [ 19 ].…”

“…Pressure differences increase alongside the tension force applied during bandaging. As a result, the massaging effect is exerted during walking [ 7 , 13 , 18 , 20 , 21 ]. Furthermore, compression safety is ensured, especially in patients with lower extremity artery disease.…”

“…Los sistemas de compresión de baja elasticidad destacan porque ejercen elevada presión de trabajo durante el ejercicio, baja presión durante el reposo, optimizan el efecto de la bomba muscular, se toleran muy bien y son muy seguros (5,6).…”
