A new variety of Fagus orientalis Lipsky (Fagaceae) from Northern Caucasus

Abstract: A new variety Fagus orientalis Lipsky var. dentata V. V. Byalt et Firsov var. nova is described. It was found in the gorge of the Kyzgych River in Teberdinsky State Natural Biosphere Reserve in Karachay-Cherkess Republic. It is well distinguished from F. orientalis var. orientalis by pointed leaves with 8–10 well developed pointed teeth on margin. The leaf margins in the type variety are entire and slightly wavy, sometimes crenate, rarely (especially in Transcaucasia) slightly dentate-crenate.
