A Non-singular Horizontal Position Representation

Abstract: Position calculations, e.g. adding, subtracting, interpolating, and averaging positions, depend on the representation used, both with respect to simplicity of the written code and accuracy of the result. The latitude/longitude representation is widely used, but near the pole singularities, this representation has several complex properties, such as error in latitude leading to error in longitude. Longitude also has a discontinuity at ±180°. These properties may lead to large errors in many standard algorithms.… Show more

“…After determining the ACNFS ice edge, the next step is to identify the ACNFS model grid point that contains the NIC Ice Edge product location. The closest ACNFS ice edge point to the NIC Ice Edge product location is found, and the distance between the two points is then computed using via the Haversine formula [ Gade , , equation (19)] De=2r normalarcsin|sin2Φ1Φ02+cosΦ0cosΦ1sin2Θ1Θ02 …”

“…Due to the small extension of a typical vineyard with respect to the Earth radius, the great circle distance calculation can be neglected and thus the distance d i between the two ending points A i and B i of each row can be calculated as the Euclidean distance on an equirectangular projection (Gade, 2010;Snyder, 1997).…”

“…The first error component ̄d GPS is the familiar geospatial position bias from GPS trilateration that the literature has long established to have zero mean and normal distribution (Gade 2010). However, the literature seldom identifies or reports on the second error component ̄d lag .…”
