A Nonconventional Approach to Formocresol Pulpotomy

Abstract: A different concept of formocresol pulpotomy procedure has been proposed where the formocresol pulpotomy is done with smaller access to the pulp chamber. In our study formocresol pulpotomy was carried out in 128 primary molar teeth with a limited amount of access opening, saving a bit of more tooth structure, which excludes the requirement of placement of a stainless steel crown (SSC). In 2 years follow-up period, no crown fracture was reported. One hundred fifteen teeth remain vital at the end of 2 years peri… Show more

“…maxillary or mandibular; first or second molar); study design; the operator; and child's cooperation. However, the clinical success of P/SSC was 100%, which was consistent with other studies (1,4,5,18,19). The radiographic success was higher than 80%, which was also relatively similar to some other studies (5,27).…”

“…Primary teeth pulpotomy is ideally followed by stainless steel crown (SSC) placement (1,2). SSCs are strongly superior to amalgam in respect to their durability, longevity and cost efficiency (2)(3)(4).…”

“…Formocresol was at first consisted of equal parts of formalin and tricresol intended to fix nonvital pulp tissue [11]. Over the years this composition changed, which led to the so-called «Buckley's formula» with 19% formaldehyde, 35% creosol, glycerin, and water [12].…”

“…Due to the side effects of formocresol, its replacement with a healthier substance seems necessary (5). For this reason, various materials such as ferric sulfate, calcium hydroxide, MTA, electrosurgery, and laser have been developed and tested for deciduous tooth pulpotomy (7). After the application of formocresol, one-third of the corpus pulp is fixed, in the middle third, chronic inflammation occurs, and in the apical third, there is living tissue, and its benefits are bactericidal, and the structures that provide it are harmless.…”
