A note on the use of dexamethasone for inducement of parturition of Finn × Dorset ewes

Abstract: SUMMARYDexamethasone (16 mg) induced parturition in sheep when injected i n the dam on day 141 of gestation. The mean time of parturition was 49·0 ±2·18 hr after the injection, with 90% of the injected ewes lambed by the 143rd day of gestation compared with the 147th day in the control group. There was no ill effect on the ewe or the lamb born.

“…The use of this procedure in ewes received an intramuscular injection of prolific sheep breeds may have special effects either: (i) 16 mg dexamethasone (9a-fluoroon the behaviour of the ewe and lamb at 16a-methylprednisolone; Sigma Chemical Co.) parturition and on lamb mortality. Time of lambing after injection ( no overall significant effect of litter size on time of lambing after dexamethasone treatment, which is contrary to that found by Shevah (1974), but there was a trend for twin-and triplet-bearing ewes treated with phosphate buffer to lamb earlier than ewes bearing singles. 1-8) h; no.…”

“…Soon after withdrawal, the samples were centrifuged, and the plasma was drawn off and stored at -15°C pending analysis. On the 141st day of gestation between 20.00 and 21.00 hours, the ewes were injected intramuscularly with 16 mg dexamethasone (Berk Pharmaceutical Ltd, Surrey) to induce parturition (Shevah, 1974) and the lambing data were recorded. Plasma non-esterifiedfatty acids These (FFA) were determined by the method described by Patterson (1963), and were used as an indication of nutritional state (Patterson, 1963;Shevah et al, 1975).…”
