A Novel Approach for MBSFN Area Formation Aided by D2D Communications for eMBB Service Delivery in 5G NR Systems

Abstract: Forthcoming 5G New Radio (NR) systems will be asked to handle a huge number of devices accessing or delivering "resource-hungry" and high-quality services. In view of this, the new 5G Radio Access Technology (RAT) aims to support, in next releases, Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) to enable the simultaneous delivery of the same content to a set of users covered by different cells. According to MBSFN, all cells belonging to the same MBSFN Area are synchronized in time and … Show more

“…Meanwhile, multicast transmission can provide effective system bandwidth usage and energy efficiency improvement, thus playing a crucial role in emerging applications [11], [12]. In multicast transmissions, a device, which acts as a personal basic service set (PBSS) central point (PCP) or access point (AP), may transmit the same packet to a group of receivers simultaneously by utilizing the same frequency and the same modulation and coding scheme (MCS) [13].…”

“…Considered as one of the most important technologies for turning 5G into a reality, D2D communication has been the subject of a vast scientific literature [1], [5], [8]. In [5], D2D technology is presented as the means to improve the performance of a multicast transmission via the establishment of direct communications between devices in proximity.…”

“…The traditional approach to multicast traffic delivery in cellular networks is the so-called Conventional Multicast Scheme (CMS) [4], which guarantees perfect fairness, since all users are served and receive the same treatment, although it suffers from poor performance levels because users with good channel conditions are constrained to the lowest data rate that cell-edge users can sustain. This is why in several works in the literature, D2D communications are exploited to improve the performance of multicast service delivery [5], [6], [7], [8]. An interesting approach to select D2D transmitters, based on the channel conditions of the links between the D2D peers, for example, is proposed in [5].…”

“…Consequently, it considerably improves the bandwidth efficiency compared to unicast mode since all users are served simultaneously by using a single wide transmission beam (omnidirectional), which generally provides very short transmission duration. In the past literature, several efficient solutions improving traditional multicast schemes in omnidirectional networks were proposed [12][13][14]. However, pure multicast schemes are almost infeasible in mmWave directional systems due to the propagation specifics at EHF bands.…”
