A novel approach of space vector modulation for cycloinverter using genetic algorithm

Abstract: A novel approach has been made to calculate the switching angles for space vector modulation (SVM) technique, which is applied in a cycloinverter to generate high-frequency power output. The turn-on and turn-off times of SVM pattern are evaluated in such a way that the total harmonic distortion (THD) is minimised and the output voltage of cycloinverter approaches as close as possible to desired sinusoidal waveform. To accomplish this optimisation task, genetic algorithms (GAs) is used and THD is adopted in the… Show more

“…For each type of switching, the switching angles are calculated offline with the help of standard optimisation technique considering minimisation of possible lower-order harmonics and reduction of higher-order harmonics which is up to the 31st order for present case. The widely used technique of GA [20][21][22][23][24] is utilised for this purpose. GA is used as it is shown to be effective in calculating switching angles for harmonic optimisation [23].…”

These angles are stored in a microcontroller memory as a function of modulation index for all the three individual switchings per quarter cycle.…”

“…For traditional space-vector PWM (SVPWM), probabilistic optimization algorithms are employed to improve the space-vector sequences. Immune algorithm (IA) [20] and genetic algorithms (GAs) [21] are examples. Moreover, the reduction of THD is also reflected on the improvement of conventional PWM, such as dual-level dual-phase carrier (DLDPC) PWM [22], staircase-PWM modulation [23] and confined band variable switching frequency PWM (CB-VSF PWM) [24].…”
