A novel approach to assess collaborative learning processes and group performance through the knowledge convergence

Abstract: The challenge of assessment in collaborative learning is well known. The major issue is whether the assessment should focus on the individual level or the group level. Traditional assessment approaches only concern about individualized assessment, examination, or coding individual transcripts into speech acts. How to support teachers to monitor and assess collaborative learning processes at the group level has not been systematically addressed. This paper aims to design a new approach for assessing collaborati… Show more

“…During collaborative learning, one challenge, for both the researchers and the practitioners, is achieving an understanding of how learners who began with different mindsets could reach joint understanding and think more alike (Roschelle, 1992). Studies show that groups' achievement of knowledge convergence is significantly associated with their learning outcomes (Fischer & Mandl, 2005;Jeong & Chi, 2007;Zheng, Chen, Huang, & Yang, 2014). Knowledge convergence, therefore, plays an important role in the success of collaborative learning and knowledge construction.…”

“…In this systematic review, digital collaborative learning is regarded as a goal‐oriented activity of a group of students committed to achieving a common goal and interactively creating new knowledge in digital learning environments . This involves sharing arguing about, and jointly processing ideas .…”

“… Zheng et al (2014) defined online collaborative learning (OCL) as a goal-oriented activity of a group of students committed to achieving a shared goal and creating new knowledge by learning interactively in a digital environment. This methodology has become widespread because of its many advantages.…”
