A novel biobased epoxy resin with high mechanical stiffness and low flammability: synthesis, characterization and properties

Abstract: A novel bio-epoxy resin, TPEU-EP, was developed. It possesses good intrinsic flame retardancy, low smoke production, and excellent mechanical properties, showing high promise for application.

“…For all of these results, we realized the reason of these phenomena and interaction between reactant and solvent depicted in Figure . According to the nucleophilic addition mechanism, the increased polarizability of the epoxy ring of ECl would make the attack of the amino group of DA‐DHPZ on the epoxy ring more easily …”

“…In Figure A, the exothermic peak temperature of TGDDM/30 phr TEPZ/40 phr DDS was higher than the one of others. This result indicated that more reactions would occur at higher temperature, and the thermal stability of the resultant may be improved . As shown in Figure B, the sample with lower DDS content had higher exothermic peak temperature than the others.…”

“…The same group also developed a sustainable route to prepare eugenol-based difunctional epoxy resin with a fully aromatic ester backbone, higher reaction activation energy, slower curing rate, a high T g , unusual intrinsic flame retardancy, low smoke production, and significantly improved mechanical properties. 26 The study on renewable eugenol-based epoxy resin has a great significance and initiates a new avenue to explore sustainable high-performance thermosets. Apart from the applications mentioned above, Derek L. Patton reported eugenol-derived catechol-functionalized thiolene polymer networks as photocurable adhesives.…”
