A Novel Cascaded Multilevel Converter Topology Based on Three-Phase Cells—CHB-SDC

Abstract: This paper proposes a new cascaded multilevel converter topology based on three-phase H bridge cells with a common DC-link structure. The proposed multilevel converter topology main advantages, compared with literature renowned multilevel converters topologies, are discussed in the paper, such as modularity, construction, implementation cost, and DC voltage ripple mitigation. Despite presenting an elementary structure and easy implementation, the use of classic PWM switching strategies is not feasible for this… Show more

“…The DC-link capacitance design for the m'th module (C dcm ) can be obtained from Equation ( 4) by setting the desired voltage ripple variation ∆V dc and from the already defined variable P T [20], where ω is the angular velocity defined as 2π f g , and M is the number of modules connected in a back-to-back configuration in the converter. The value of ∆V dc can be determined from a defined percentage of the nominal DC-link voltage V dc .…”

“…Recently, also for power electronics-based devices, some researchers proposed the use of graph theory for mapping all the possible switching states of multilevel converters, applied to motor drive [19], static synchronous compensation (STATCOM) [20,21], and solid-state transformers (SST) applications [2]. In fact, these works use the semiconductor switches to map all existing current paths, identifying prohibitive states, resulting in a switching matrix containing only the possible device combinations.…”

“…The series connection of a fixed number of modules represents an arm [3] of the converter. Based on the number of arms and their relative configuration, different versions of the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) can be realized [4,5].…”

“…These considerations underline the need for a more detailed study where the possibility to influence the MMC cell power losses should be investigated. In fact, although many authors recognize the common mode reference [5] as a degree of freedom for the MMCs, no analysis of its effect on the cell power losses has been conducted.…”

“…Model predictive control is adopted as a superior control mechanism in transmission systems to overcome the power interrupts. The optimized switching vectorbased STATCOM has been established to upgrade power quality in the system [25]. A multi modular converter with quadrature voltage compensation control method is used to compute the circulating current and to control huge power imbalances in the system [26].…”
