A novel cascading scheme to improve the performance of voltage multiplier circuits

Abstract: The voltage multiplier (VM) circuit is a cascade arrangement designed from a series of rectifiers to obtain high DC output voltage. In this classical approach, the DC voltage which is getting generated in the present stage contributes to the next stage. This phenomenon is recurring at every stage resulting into higher DC output voltage than previous. The proposed signaling scheme enables the use of the rectified DC voltage/stage in a classical way along with the involvement of instantaneous input RF voltage. A… Show more

“…A performance comparison of the proposed rectifier versus recent ISM 433MHz rectifiers is summarized in table II. The proposed rectifier shows 2× improvement in dynamic range and 5× enhancement in efficiency relative to [6]. More than 50% wider dynamic range and doubled efficiency is achieved compared to [15] with a 9× chip area saving.…”

“…W IRELESS power transfer (WPT) applications range from powering battery-less wireless sensors [1], RFIDs [2], and implantable devices [3]- [5], to the higher scale of space-based solar cells and wirelessly charged electric vehicles. It utilizes various frequency bands starting from low-MHz for low-power implants [4], [5] to UHF RFID tags [2], including the 433MHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band [6] that is used for license-free communication, underwater wireless-sensor networks [7], and automotive applications such as battery-less tire-pressure monitoring systems [8]. Among this myriad of battery-less devices, the wireless power receiver is considered the linchpin for any given WPT system.…”

“…Nevertheless, the attempt to minimize conduction loss entails a compromise of increased reversion loss, which negatively impacts the charge pump's overall performance. Over the past few decades, a wide range of techniques for improving CP performance has been documented in the literature [2], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16], aimed at addressing the aforementioned challenges. Despite significant research focused on optimizing CP topologies, there remains potential for further innovation in architectural improvements.…”
