A novel class of neural networks with quadratic junctions

Abstract: Abstracr-This paper discusses the architecture and training properties of a multilayer feedforward neural network class that uses quadratic junctions. Complexity and learning aspests of this class are examined and compared with traditional networks that use linear junctions.

“…In fact, the producing of postsynaptic potential (PSP) in biological neurons is, most likely, a nonlinear process. This motivated us to build a new model of neurons that make good use of this nonlinearity [12]. In fact, the use of quadratic neural-type junctions was also inspired by intuitive concepts of cluster analysis [13].…”

“…This limitation has prompted researchers to experiment with neuron models with altered node connection functions. For instance, Yau and Manry [12], DeClaris [2], and Kavuri and Venkatasubramanian [5] report good results using neuron models that employ quadratic or ellipsoidal node connection functions. Lane et al [6] propose a neural architecture in which B-spline receptive fields are embedded in the node connection functions.…”

“…(1) which performs linear transformation of input data; the other one comprising of quadratic junctions given by equation. (2) which produces an adaptive hyper-ellipsoid. These types of quadratic junctions are capable of achieving hyper-ellipsoidal discriminants that can be varied in sizes and in locations.…”

“…Linear junctions are not good enough to represent the real process happening among neurons. Hence a new model of neurons that makes use of quadratic neural-type junctions [2] was developed. The use of quadratic neural-type junctions was also inspired by intuitive concepts of cluster analysis.…”
