A Novel Combined Method of Osteosynthesis in Treatment of Tibial Fractures: A Comparative Study on Sheep with Application of Rod‐Through‐Plate Fixator and Bone Plating

Abstract: The study compares the efficiency of a new bone fixator combining periostal and intramedullary osteosynthesis to bone plating in treatment of tibial fractures in sheep. Experimental osteotomies were performed in the middle third of the left tibia. Animals were divided into two groups: in one group (four animals) combined osteosynthesis (rod-through-plate fixator, RTP fixator) was applied, and in the other group (three animals) bone plating was used. The experiments lasted for 10 weeks during which fracture uni… Show more

“…In contrast to small animal models, the predominant research topic is the examination of different fixation techniques. The study of nailing techniques or materials after artificial fracture 110,111 or osteotomy [112][113][114] even with an induced bacterial infection 115 as well as the study of different plating techniques or materials, [116][117][118] and the biomechanical influences of different fixation techniques in fracture healing are widely examined. [119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129] Technical influences on fracture healing, including ultrasound 130,131 or shockwave 132 are only rarely described in large animal models.…”

“…We have reported the TTA CF technique on ovine model. Sheep are becoming popular as animal model in orthopedic research in both human and veterinary medicine [ 28 , 32 , 39 , 40 , 42 ]. In humans, the use dogs are reduced due to the emotional impact related to these kinds of animals [ 28 ].…”

“…TTA CF titanium implants and special guides are dedicated for dogs affected by CCL insufficiency. The sheep was chosen as a model animal because the anatomy and biomechanics of the stifle joint are similar to dogs [ 28 , 32 , 39 , 40 , 42 ].…”

“…Complications from 6-8% have been noted [235,236]. Another attempt to have a more stable osteosynthesis is the rod-through-plate osteosynthesis with low complication rates [237]. The advantage of plate osteosynthesis for testing drug delivery systems is the accessibility of the defect.…”
