A Novel Enzootic Nasal Tumor Virus Circulating in Goats from Southern China

Abstract: Enzootic nasal tumor virus (ENTV) has two types, ENTV-1 in sheep and ENTV-2 in goats, respectively. In China, the incidence of ENTV-2 related diseases has increased year by year. In this study, we reported an outbreak of ENTV-2 in a commercial goat farm in Qingyuan city, Guangdong province, southern China. A full-length genome of ENTV-2 (designated GDQY2017), with 7479 base pairs, was sequenced. Although GDQY2017 shared the highest nucleotide identity with a Chinese ENTV-2 isolate (ENTV-2CHN4, GenBank accessio… Show more

“…ENA has also been described in goats and is associated with another betaretrovirus similar to JSRV named enzootic nasal tumour virus of goats (ENTV-2) [ 47 ]. ENA in goats seems to be expanding in China, and ENTV-2 isolates showed significant genetic differences from reported European ones [ 73 , 74 ]. Pathological descriptions in these cases showed some particular aspects which may be related to the differences observed between the Chinese and European isolates [ 73 , 74 ].…”

Pathological descriptions in these cases showed some particular aspects which may be related to the differences observed between the Chinese and European isolates [ 73 , 74 ]. In addition, a nasal adenocarcinoma in sheep associated with JSRV but not with ENTV-1 has been recently reported in Ireland [ 75 ].…”

“…The viral genome sequences isolated from different provinces have been obtained and analyzed, which enriches the genetic information of ENTV-2 and will be helpful for further understanding the geographical distribution and evolutionary characteristics of ENTV-2. In addition, ENTV-1 infection in sheep has not been reported, suggesting a potential outbreak of ENTV-2 in China [7,[123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130]. As OPA and JSRV have been reported in different sheep breeding regions in China, researchers should focus on understanding ENTV infection in both goats and sheep.…”

“…At necropsy, the tumors may be bilateral or more commonly unilateral. Gross evaluation, cytology, histopathology, PCR, and transmission electron microscopy are helpful for the diagnosis of ENA (8)(9)(10).…”
