A novel genotype of hepatitis E virus prevalent among farmed rabbits in China

Abstract: In total, 335 serum samples were collected from rabbits from two farms in Gansu province, China, and tested for anti-hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibody using EIA and for HEV RNA using nested RT- PCR with ORF2 primers. The overall prevalence of anti-HEV antibody and HEV RNA was 57.0% (191/335) and 7.5% (25/335), respectively. The positivity rate of HEV RNA in the anti-HEV antibody negative group (7.6% (11/144)) did not differ significantly from that in the positive group (7.3% (14/191)). The concordance between H… Show more

“…Chronic HEV infection with considerable morbidity and mortality has recently been documented in immunocompromised individuals such as organ transplant recipients (9). As a zoonotic pathogen, HEV has been genetically identified from humans and a number of other animal species, including chickens, pigs, deer, rabbits, cutthroat trout, mongooses, rats, bats, and ferrets (1,4,6,8,13,15,17,18). The first animal strain of HEV, swine HEV, is zoonotic and infects humans (12,13).…”

“…Genotypes 3 and 4 infect several animals, including humans, swine, boar, deer, and mongooses (19). Besides these four genotypes there are additional mammalian HEV strains that have been isolated from rabbits (33), rats (14), and wild boars (24). The relationship between these more recently characterized strains and the recognized genotypes is still a matter of research and debate.…”

“…Króliczy HEV po raz pierwszy zidentyfikowano w Chinach w 2009 r. u królików rasy rex pochodzących z hodowli wielkotowarowych (72). Króliczy HEV jest genetycznie i antygenowo blisko spokrewniony z wirusami izolowanymi od innych ssaków (70).…”
