A novel green nonaqueous sol-gel process for preparation of partially stabilized zirconia nanopowder

Abstract: A novel green nonaqueous sol-gel process was developed to prepare 3 mol% Y 2 O 3-doped ZrO 2 nanopowder from zirconium oxychloride and without need for washing of the obtained particles. It was shown that highly dispersive nanometer-scale zirconia powder with the particle size of 15-25 nm and BET surface area of 41.2 m 2 /g can be prepared. The sintering behaviour was also investigated. Density of the translucent body sintered at 1400°C is 98.7 ± 0.3% of its theoretical density and the surface and cross sectio… Show more

“…Agglomeration is also a drawback of this method. A modified, nonaqueous sol-gel process has been recently proposed as a novel green method for the preparation of highly dispersive 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia nanopowder with particle sizes of 15–25 nm [19]. In the solution combustion synthesis , different types of organic fuels (i.e.…”

“…The basic advantage of colloidal processes compared to dry-pressing is the higher homogeneity and density of the green compact that presents less intergranular voids' inclusion [34]. Higher density is usually associated with improved mechanical performance [35] due to a lack of internal flaws that act as fracture initiators. Group A ceramics were sintered at 1580°C for 2.5 hours and group B at 1450°C for 2 hours.…”

“…2 Zirconia has been synthesized by different methods, such as combustion synthesis, ion exchange, solid-state reaction, solgel synthesis, glycothermal processing, Pechini method, and a wet chemical method. 3,4 Zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ) is a ceramic material that has become attractive due to its mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties and is becoming also very important as reinforcement in polymer matrix composites. 5 It may be used in transparent optical devices, 6 electrochemical capacitor electrodes, oxygen sensors, 7 fuel cells 8 as catalyst support 9 and as a biomaterial.…”
