A novel guanidinium grafted poly(aryl ether sulfone) for high-performance hydroxide exchange membranes

Abstract: A novel poly(aryl ether sulfone) ionomer containing hexaalkylguanidinium groups was synthesized, and membranes formed from this polymer displayed large ionic clusters, high hydroxide conductivity, and excellent solubility in low boiling point water-soluble solvents such as ethanol and methanol.

“…[22][23][24][25] In this work, we aim to study the DMAFC performances of two AEMs developed at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). Both membranes are based on a poly(phenylene) backbone, the first one developed, aminated tetramethyl poly(phenylene) (ATMPP), contains BTMA cations and the second one, trimethylamine hexamethylene poly(phenylene) (TMAC6PP), has hexamethylene spacers separating the quaternary ammonium groups from the poly(phenylene) backbone ( Figure 1).…”

“…For example, the route in Ref. [9], the authors present a route which employed thiourea as guanidylation reagents at 80 • C; the cyanamide route used DMSO as the solvent [8]; and Vilsmeier salt even required the participation of phosgene [11,12]. These conditions are not environmental friendly and may destroy the chemical and thermal stability of the base polymers.…”

“…Generally, guanidylation reagents are directly used to modify the amino group or chlorine atoms in the polymer matrixes to form guanidyl groups. And the guanidylation reagents mainly include cyanamide and its derivative [8], thiourea and its derivative [9,10], Vilsmeier salt obtained from urea and phosgene [11,12], and 1H-pyrazole-1-carboxamidine hydrochloride (HPCA) [13,14]. Among these guanidylation reagents, thiourea, cyanamide and Vilsmeier salts need to be used in organic solvents or at higher temperatures.…”

“…It has been widely used in various industrial applications, such as electronics, machinery, automobile, food, and medical equipments, paints and so on. [1][2][3] However, because of their amorphous nature, poly(aryl ether sulfone)s is readily soluble in common solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAc), chloroform, and tetrahydrofuran (THF). This limits their application.…”
