A novel indicator for surveillance colonoscopy following colorectal cancer resection

Abstract: The immunological faecal occult blood test provides sensitive detection of metachronous and recurrent cancer in postoperative surveillance. Routine application may be used to reduce the frequency of colonoscopic surveillance, as a negative FOBT may be taken as a sign that colonoscopy may be deferred safely.

“…In four cases the cancer was a local recurrence and in five it was a metachronous cancer. 7 The lesions that we detected may have been missed or may have been rapidly developing lesions. A miss rate for significant adenomas (polyps >10 mm) has been demonstrated to be as high as 8%, and up to 15% for adenomas greater than 5 mm.…”

“…However, small sample sizes and small numbers of target lesions hamper the generalization of these results. In patients with a personal history of CRC, one study showed a 100% sensitivity for detecting 9 recurrent CRCs [32]. These results were obtained from stools collected with digital examination and therefore not representative for at home FIT sampling.…”

“…In Studien zwischen 1997 und Februar 2008 wird über niedrige Zahlen der intraluminalen Rezidive und metachronen KRK, die in der Nachsorge-Koloskopie entdeckt werden, berichtet (1-9 %) [54,[57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72] (vgl. Tab.…”
