This paper presents a design of Smith predictor (SP) for a multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) chemical process with multiple time delays based on a fuzzy decoupling scheme. The decoupling control is achieved using fuzzy logic, to reduce the reliance on model‐based analysis in comparison with conventional decoupling. The proposed scheme is easy to realize and simple to design, as well as having a good decoupling capability. The SP is added to the system to overcome the problem of time delay. Stability conditions of the overall closed loop system based on a PI controller in the presence of a fuzzy decoupling scheme are formulated. The Wood and Berry model of a binary distillation column and an industrial‐scale polymerization reactor model are used as two examples to illustrate the applicability of the proposed scheme.
