A Novel, Low-Cost Method of Enrolling Infants at Risk for Retinopathy of Prematurity in Centers with No Screening Program: The REDROP Study

Abstract: REDROP demonstrates the feasibility of this low-cost method of enrolling unscreened infants into a ROP program. The cost of enrolling each infant was less than 5 rupees (US$0.10). Suggested strategies to improve use require multi-center validation.

“…Whereas the government centres show a more even gender ratio distribution, private hospitals show a higher proportion of males enrolled (Table 4, P < 0001). We have reported this unfortunate trend from a citybased public hospital, and it is likely that parents would preferentially use financial resources for the treatment of a male child in a private hospital or because practitioners could be more aggressively managing male infants [20]. (6) Our data show that 20% of babies who required treatment would have been missed for screening if the American screening guidelines (1500 g and 30 weeks) [23] had been used.…”

“…Postnatal oxygen administration was recognized as an additional risk factor [12], but the detrimental effects of oxygen administration have been minimized in many clinical settings in the developing world [13]. Postnatal weight gain, in contrast, has only recently received attention among clinicians as a novel method to independently predict which infants are at risk of developing sight-threatening ROP [7,11,14,15,16,17]. …”

“…A higher proportion of APROP cases have been reported in Indian studies. 15,18,20,21 The low incidence of severe APROP in this study may be attributed to improved neonatal care, strict surveillance, and regular monitoring of the cases.…”
