A novel modulation scheme for a modular multiphase multilevel converter in a power hardware-in-the-loop emulation system

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents a novel modulation strategy for a Modular Multiphase Multilevel Converter especially for the usage in Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Emulation Systems. The proposed modulation scheme generates the required voltage time area by means of an integrator in a quasi continuous operation mode. Therefore, the fixed modulation period is disestablished to achieve a minimum response time of the emulation converter. The switching states of the parallel half-bridges are selected by a sorting algori… Show more

“…This new converter topology is perfectly suited to be used as a universal low harmonics sinusoidal voltage source. Hence, it is suitable to replace more complex state-of-the-art multilevel converter topologies such as the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) [5] or the Modular Multiphase Multilevel Converter (MMPMC) [6]. The PHC topology is also well suited to replace bulky and expensive LCL-filters in conventional grid-connected converter systems.…”

“…Main approaches to reach higher switching frequency and dynamics in this case are series voltage injection by a second inverter [3] [4], interleaved parallel operation of inverters or phases [5] [6] and multilevel inverters. The latter offer a higher apparent output switching frequency than their two-or threelevel counterparts with the same output voltage and power rating.…”

“…Though, the integration of the calculated counter voltage over the time will solve this problem, if the required voltage time area will be set as short time mean value with an explicit higher frequency than the switching frequency of the DUT. A modular multiphase multilevel converter (MMPMC) as proposed in [14] seems to be suitable for this application.…”
