A Novel Multi-State Integrated Rf Mems Switch for Reconfigurable Antennas Applications

Abstract: Abstract-A novel multi-state RF MEMS switch for microstrip antenna applications is presented. The proposed switch exhibits seven different states of operation, has a very simple DC biasing mechanism, and can be integrated with antenna structure. Based on these properties, this switch may find its usage in multifunction reconfigurable antennas. To exhibit this application, it is employed in the reconfiguration mechanism of a U-slotted antenna. In different states of the switch, the antenna resonates at differen… Show more

“…Table 2 tabulates the switch configurations and resonant frequency of the proposed antenna. From observation, the simulated and measured resonant frequencies of F 4 to F 6 have similar values because the patch acts as the radiator where it is not affected by the switches. Meanwhile, F 1 to F 3 are produced by the slot radiator.…”

“…In 1999, a reconfigurable leaky patch antenna using PIN diode was presented in [5]. From 1999 until the present day, microstrip antenna has been used as a platform to design reconfigurable antenna [6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…Their mechanical switching action and higher cutoff frequency makes them superior to other semiconductor switches. Their salient features include good linearity, very low insertion loss in ON state and high isolation in OFF state [5][6][7][8]. RF MEMS switches with good performance have shown anticipated commercial production in specific RF applications.…”

“…RF MEMS have gained such considerable significance that they are now being integrated with antennas to enhance operation. RF MEMS have been tested for use in reconfigurable RF antennas [17]. This paper deals with a novel metal contact switch that employs a see-saw beam movement mechanism.…”
