A Novel Multicriteria Evaluation of Small-Scale LNG Supply Alternatives: The Case of Greece

Abstract: Natural gas as fuel for electricity production has significant advantages, such as the reduction of environmental emissions and the lower operational cost. Due to the flexibility of gas engines, the exploitation of renewable energy sources in an area, can be maximized. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the possibility of LNG supply for sustainable electricity production in insular small-scale electricity systems. A novel multicriteria evaluation model has been developed, based on the me… Show more

“…The transportation of NG as LNG is preferred because of its lower cost and high safety compared with a pipeline (gaseous) transportation over long distances [8]. Due to this, the pipeline gas trade has been reduced by seven times than the LNG trade [9]. However, a primary issue with LNG processes is operating expenditure in terms of energy required to liquefy NG.…”

“…Specifically for Greece, the use of LNG in shipping would reduce dependence on oil, with beneficial effects on the national economy, as long as gas prices remain competitive. However, in order for Greece to exploit LNG, investments will be needed in the ports, in order to make gas available as fuel for those ships that will choose it in the future (Strantzali et al, 2018).…”

“…and. The transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) began in the 1960s, as a result of increasing energy demand in remoted regions (Strantzali et al, 2018). The transportation of gas by pipelines is preferred up to distances of about 2000 km.…”
