A Novel Physical Layer Authentication With PAPR Reduction Based on Channel and Hardware Frequency Responses

Abstract: Next generation wireless communications such as 5G are expected to feature wide channel bandwidths on the order of hundreds of MHz. As bandwidths increase, circuit impairments caused by frequency dependent behaviour such as ripple and tilt in gain and group delay become more significant. PAPR of OFDM signals also increase with increasing number of subcarriers. Transmitter circuit characterisation for the wide-band frequency response is needed to pre-compensate the signal to be transmitted. In this article, we … Show more

“…All these features can be used to achieve the physical-layer authentication, since a pair device produced by the same process would own different hardware characteristic. A recent study in [17] shows that devices features can also be applied to physical-layer key generation. By exchanging the stimulus, each transceiver gets the information of both the channel and the circuit characteristics on the other side.…”

“…Besides, keyless transmission also avoids the potential threat from powerful computational devices. Secondly, by using the fingerprint from devices or the wireless channel, PLS is expected to offer an efficient and direct authentication which will help THz network to simplify the handshake process and reduce the authentication latency [16,17]. Thirdly, some applications of THz communication provide perfect stages for PLS.…”

“…Given the spatial diversity in wireless systems, accurate channel estimations could be used to provide message source authentication. Demonstrated channel estimation schemes include the use of pilot tones in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) [10], circuit characteristics combined with channel response [11] and reconfigurable transmit antennas [12]. Other authentication approaches use deep learning [13], [14] to detect change in the channel condition and thus provide intrusion detection.…”

“…These techniques are referred to as "feature tracking". Hardware imperfections attributes are also utilized to construct a radio frequency fingerprint for each terminal in the network [9][10]. However, these approaches demonstrated low reliability due to the signal quality fluctuation caused by the limited range of communication devices as well as the significant variations of channel attributes over time.…”
