A Novel Prediction Tool Based on Large Cohorts to Determine the Cancer-Specific Survival Probability of Patients With Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer After Irreversible Electroporation Treatment

Abstract: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a novel method which was especially suitable for the treatment of locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate probabilities of overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with LAPC after IRE treatment and to construct nomograms to predict survival for these patients. Data of patients were retrospectively collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and medical records of Sun… Show more

“…In addition to the abovementioned factors, tumor size was also proven to be a significant parameter and included in our prognostic model, which is in accordance with other similar studies ( 25 , 43 ). The liver is the most common site of metastasis for PC, followed by the lungs.…”

“…25 Although IRE ablation of PC has shown encouraging results, it has been limited to stage III LAPC thus far. [26][27][28][29][30] Furthermore, IRE can be used to treat large tumors ( > 5 cm) in cases where chemotherapy fails to produce a significant decrease in tumor size. 31 Recent systematic reviews reported a comparable morbidity of 30% and a mortality of 2.2% after IRE.…”

“…Moreover, immunologic studies suggest that IRE may induce a systemic immune response that might result in the destruction of micrometastases, except from local tumor destruction, which could further improve survival 25. Although IRE ablation of PC has shown encouraging results, it has been limited to stage III LAPC thus far 26–30. Furthermore, IRE can be used to treat large tumors (>5 cm) in cases where chemotherapy fails to produce a significant decrease in tumor size 31.…”

“…Studies on the prognosis of malignant tumors usually focus on the long-term survival of patients ( 26 , 27 ); only a few studies have focused on early death ( 19 , 28 ). The risk of early death is higher for more aggressive or advanced tumors.…”
