A Novel Reverse Micellar System Composed of Bis(octylethylenediamine)zinc(II) Chloride in Aqueous Benzene and Chloroform Solutions

Abstract: We prepared Zn(octylethylenediamine(= oct-en))2Cl2 and found that its solubilities to benzene and chloroform are appreciably enhanced with an addition of water. This solubilizaiton can be attributed to the formation of reverse micelles. Vapor pressure osmometry(VPO) showed appreciable aggregations in benzene solutions, and 13C and 2H NMR relaxations for the zinc complex and water molecules, respectively, suggest their extensive motional restrictions in benzene and chloroform solutions by the aggregations.

“…Surfactant metal complexes are expected to provide a wide range of interesting phenomena on aggregation in aqueous solution due to variations in charge numbers, size and extent of hydrophobicity through combination of the central metal and ligands [5]. However, their physical properties in solution have not been studied extensively [69]. …”

“…On the other hand, one (M.I.) of the authors of the present study , synthesized bis( N- octylethylenediamine)zinc(II) chloride (Zn(oct-en) 2 Cl 2 , (oct-en) 2 = CH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH(CH 2 ) 2 NH 2 ), which is insoluble in water but somewhat soluble in benzene and highly soluble in chloroform . However, its solubility in organic solvents increases with the addition of an appropriate quantity of water.…”

“…Zn(oct-en) 2 Cl 2 was synthesized by mixing ZnCl 2 with oct-en (molar ratio 1:3) in ethanol:water (volume ratio 3:2) mixed solvent under stirring . After evaporation of the solvent, the crude Zn(oct-en) 2 Cl 2 was extracted into chloroform from a water/chloroform system and recrystallized from ethanol.…”

“…Materials: N ‐Hexylethylenediamine, N ‐octylethylenediamine, and N ‐dodecylethylenediamine were prepared according to reported procedures 11a,11b. The silver complexes were synthesized according to a similar procedure as described for the N ‐hexadecylethylenediamine complex but the crystallization from the reaction mixtures was performed by the addition of cyclohexane to a methanol solution.…”
