“…Based on the successful clinical application of a radioactive stent in patients with esophageal carcinoma or malignant biliary obstruction [ [12] , [13] , [14] ], the tracheal stent loaded with 125 I seeds was developed for preventing restenosis of the stent. The feasibility and safety of inserting such a radioactive stent into the airway have been demonstrated in the healthy beagle dog models [ 15 ]. In this prospective study, we aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this radioactive bare metal stent (RBMS) versus conventional bare metal stent (CBMS) in patients with inoperable MAO.…”

“…Interestingly, similar phenomena were observed in terms of DCR. 125 I brachytherapy is a type of low-dose-rate therapy because the dose delivered by RIS implanted permanently in place is <1 Gy per h. Meanwhile, 125 I brachytherapy can also be treated as high-dose-rate therapies, in which the radiation is delivered over several courses (36,37). The accumulated dose of tumor and efficacy increase as irradiation time moves along.…”

“…Recently, brachytherapy with interstitial RIS implantation has been used with promising results for the treatment of solid tumors, particularly in prostate tumors. 8 The insertion of self-expandable stents loaded with RIS has been established as a new treatment strategy, combining the advantages of rapid patency achievement and continuous brachytherapy administration to prevent obstruction. The modality was initially applied to treat unresectable esophageal cancer and was subsequently extended to biliary obstruction caused by various adenocarcinomas.…”
