A Novel Sobel Edge Detection Accelerator Based on Reconfigurable Architecture

Abstract: A novel Sobel edge detection accelerator based on reconfigurable architecture is proposed to solve the problem of low power-to-performance ratio of traditional Sobel edge detection algorithm in CPU processing. The accelerator adopts pixel level fine grain image data parallel processing and row buffer storage architecture to improve the processing efficiency of edge detection. At the same time, a reconfigurable architecture based on FPGA is built. Through experiments, it can be found that the acceleration effec… Show more

“…In the field of real-time image processing, FPGAs are receiving increasing attention due to their pipeline architecture and flexibility. Tu 6 introduced a robust real-time visual control design and implementation for a rotary inverted pendulum with an FPGA-based image co-processor; Zhou 7 developed a fast and efficient hardware LSD algorithm on FPGA for real-time video systems; Lyu 8 presented a binocular structured light 3D sensor based on FPGA; Xu 9 introduced a new FPGA-based Sobel edge detection accelerator; Jin 10 proposed a real-time stereo vision system, which can provide a disparity image by using a single FPGA. This paper proposes and implements a novel method for edge extraction of hot-rolled strip based on machine vision and FPGA.…”
