A novel transcatheter arterial infusion chemotherapy using iodized oil and degradable starch microspheres for hepatocellular carcinoma: a prospective randomized trial

Abstract: TAI using lipiodol and DSM was superior to TAI using lipiodol only and TAI using DSM only because of improvements in therapeutic effects and progression-free survival.

“…Only few data are available on the therapeutic efficacy of DSM chemoembolization for HCC treatment (15,16). The present study therefore retrospectively compared the clinical outcomes of DSM chemoembolization with doxorubicin versus those of conventional chemoembolization with doxorubicin and Ethiodol with regard to tumor response and overall survival, as well as potential side effects associated with these two interventional strategies.…”

“…Therefore, we designed TAI using lipiodol and DSMs (Lip ? DSM-TAI) for use in HCC patients [20,21]. In the study reported here, we investigated the predictors influencing response and survival in HCC patients receiving Lip ?…”

“…[69] performed a prospective randomized trial to compare the efficacy of a single arterial infusion (TAI) chemotherapy using combined Lipiodol and DSMs versus both Lipiodol-TAI or DSMs-TAI, in 45 cirrhotic (both CPT stages A and B) patients with mono- or multi-lobar HCC (tumor size range: 27–33 mm). The study showed a trend toward a greater tumor response rate in the combined Lipiodol/DSMs-TAI group (complete response = 40%) compared with the two monotherapy groups (Lipiodol-TAI: complete response = 26.7% and DSMs-TAI: complete response = 26.7%).…”
