A Numerical and Experimental Study of Adhesively-Bonded Polyethylene Pipelines

Abstract: Adhesive bonding of polyethylene gas pipelines is receiving increasing attention as a replacement for traditional electrofusion welding due to its potential to produce rapid and low-cost joints with structural integrity and pressure tight sealing. In this paper a mode-dependent cohesive zone model for the simulation of adhesively bonded medium density polyethylene (MDPE) pipeline joints is directly determined by following three consecutive steps. Firstly, the bulk stress-strain response of the MDPE adherend wa… Show more

“…The peeling test used the cohesive zone model (CZMs) to simulate elastic loading, damage initiation, and crack growth due to local failure within a material. 22 The final steps and force−displacement curve results of the three cases are listed in Figure 6.…”

“…So that, they required very keen and costly observation. In recent years, extensive research has been carried on the mechanical properties of adhesive joint composite materials [10][11] and bolted joint composite materials [12][13]. Joining the components also means a loss of continuity, which affects the performance and also reasons the damage of overall efficiency.…”

“…The design of a composite connection structure is one of the difficulties in the research of composite application, and the bearing capacity of the joint directly affects the reliability of composite components. A great deal of research has been conducted on the mechanical properties of the conventional bonded [1][2][3][4][5][6] and bolted [7][8][9][10] joints of composite materials. Many adhesives undergo instantaneous brittle fracture when they fail, resulting in sudden damage to the structure.…”
