A numerical taxonomic study of Flavobacterium‐Cytophaga strains from dairy sources

Abstract: Phenotypic data on 203 Gram-negative non-fermentative bacteria of the Flavobacterium-Cytophaga group isolated from milk and butter were analyzed by numerical taxonomic techniques. Twenty reference strains including species of Flavobacterium, Cytophaga and strains of Pseudomonas paucimobilis were included in the study. Using the matching coefficient of Sokal & Michener with antibiotic susceptibility data included, 189 isolates were recovered in nine clusters. Six of these clusters were linked at or above the 85… Show more

“…The family Flavobacteriaceae, proposed by Jooste (1985), is one of the most widely expanding families in the phylum Bacteroidetes: more than 50 genera have been described, most of them in recent years. The genus Gaetbulibacter was erected by Jung et al (2005) to accommodate the novel species Gaetbulibacter saemankumensis, isolated from a tidal flat sediment in the Yellow Sea in Korea.…”

“…The family Flavobacteriaceae was proposed by Jooste (1985), and its description has since been subjected to repeated emendation (Bernardet et al, 1996(Bernardet et al, , 2002. In addition to providing phylogenetic data, Bernardet et al (2002) proposed minimal standards for separating the genera classified as belonging to the family Flavobacteriaceae: these standards included characteristics relating to pigmentation, gliding motility, the seawater requirement, growth at different temperatures, cellular fatty acid composition and DNA G+C content.…”

“…The family Flavobacteriaceae, one of the major branches of the phylum Bacteroidetes, was first proposed by Jooste (1985), and was included in the first edition of Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology (Reichenbach, 1989). The name of the family was subsequently validated (Reichenbach, 1992), and its description was subsequently emended considerably (Bernardet et al, 1996(Bernardet et al, , 2002.…”
