A One-Dimensional Array of Clusters:  Na2Mo6Cl8(O2CC5H4FeCp)6·CH3OH

Abstract: Reaction of Na2Mo6Cl8(OMe)6 with CpFeC5H4CO2H produces the new cluster Na2Mo6Cl8(O2CC5H4FeCp)6·HOCH3, which consists of a novel one-dimensional chain from the interactions of the Na+ ions with the carboxylate ligands of adjacent clusters. Coordination of the Na+ cations to the carboxylate ligands is reflected in the vibrational spectroscopy of the sodium salt of [Mo6Cl8(O2CC5H4FeCp)6]2-. Both the [Mo6Cl8]4+ and ferrocenecarboxylate groups are redox active. Voltammetry of the sodium salt of the cluster in DMSO … Show more

“…
Six ferrocenedicarboxylate units with unprecedented coordination modes assembled with four Pb(II) and four Na(I) simultaneously resulting in a novel nano-scale double-wheel-like framework [Pb 4 Na 4 (O 2 CFcCO 2 ) 6 (H 2 O) 6 ] AE 6CH 3 OH AE 2H 2 O, whose structure and electrochemical properties were characterized. The design and assembly of nano-scale molecules with many ferrocene moieties has attracted great interests due to their peculiar topologies and unusual properties [1]. For further development of this kind of organometallic supermolecular complexes, much effort has been devoted to selecting appropriate central cores that can support the multi-ferrocene units and preparing ferrocenyl derivatives which can be used as excellent ligands.

“…This situation is in contrast to the one reported by Shriver and coworkers, who observed spontaneous decomposition of the ferrocenyl-attached molybdenum cluster Na 2 [Mo 6 Cl 8 {O 2 C-(C 5 H 4 )Fe(C 5 H 5 )} 6 ]´CH 3 OH upon oxidation. [17] Experimental Section 3: A mixture of 1 (0.21 g, 1.0 mmol) and 2 (0.23 g, 1.0 mmol) in benzene (120 mL) was heated under reflux for 6 h using a Dean ± Stark apparatus to remove by azeotropic distillation the water formed in the reaction. The reaction mixture was filtered and the solvent removed from the filtrate in vacuo to afford a red-orange powder, which was found to be analytically pure and was shown to be 3.…”
