A pair of diopter-adjustable eyeglasses for presbyopia correction

Abstract: We describe and demonstrate a pair of diopter-adjustable eyeglasses aimed to correct presbyopia; the glasses provide a tunable optical power in the whole surface of the lens cell, eliminating the optical distortion typical of bifocal/trifocal or progressive glasses. The wearer can actively control the optical power by a simple sliding gesture on the bridge of the glasses, so that presbyopic vision can be interactively corrected. Results from a preliminary experiment showed that a presbyopia sufferer could clea… Show more

“…Some VR/AR devices do not take into account the visual differences of different users, which may cause pupil mismatch problems. Liquid lenses can play the function of vision correction and spatial zooming; [222][223][224] so that, the myopic or hypermetropic people can also use the VR/AR devices with a good viewing experience. In addition, traditional parallax-based VR/AR display generally has vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) problems.…”

“…To overcome these limitations and cater to the dynamic gaze requirements of individuals with presbyopia, autofocal lenses offer a promising solution. By using focus tunable lenses that can dynamically adjust their optical power to focus on the currently fixated object, autofocals replicate the eye's natural accommodation mechanism [2,28,20,11]. This approach offers the potential for a more natural and convenient visual experience, providing clear focus at different viewing distances.…”

“…Behavioral quantifiers also provide objective user experience and satisfaction measures, enabling researchers to gain valuable insights into users' preferences and inform future improvements and customization of these devices. As the field of autofocals continues to evolve, addressing the associated challenges and optimizing their performance become crucial. Exploring different control mechanisms, evaluating their effectiveness, and understanding their limitations is vital in advancing this technology and providing enhanced visual convenience and performance for presbyopia correction.Autofocals are gaining attention as a new spectacle solution for presbyopia [15][16][17][18] . These spectacles utilize focus-tunable lenses that dynamically adjust their optical power to focus on the currently fixated object 9 .…”

“…The thrust of much of the work on larger lenses often involves improving the optical quality, speed, field of view, weight, power consumption, and focal range of the lenses. Some have gone further and incorporated these focustunable lenses into an eyeglass form factor (23)(24)(25)(26). While many of these require some form of manual control, Hasan et al (23,24) incorporate a single-pixel time-of-flight depth sensor to automatically update the lenses on the basis of what is directly in front of the wearer (a refocusing mechanism referred to from this point forward as "depth-tracked").…”
