A panel of tumor markers, calreticulin, annexin A2, and annexin A3 in upper tract urothelial carcinoma identified by proteomic and immunological analysis

Abstract: BackgroundUpper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a tumor with sizable metastases and local recurrence. It has a worse prognosis than bladder cancer. This study was designed to investigate the urinary potential tumor markers of UTUC.MethodsBetween January 2008 and January 2009, urine was sampled from 13 patients with UTUC and 20 healthy adults. The current study identified biomarkers for UTUC using non-fixed volume stepwise weak anion exchange chromatography for fractionation of urine protein prior to two-d… Show more

“…Therefore, the results of the current study indicated that high Annexin A2 expression is associated with poor prognosis in patients with laryngeal cancer, suggesting that Annexin A2 may act as an independent prognostic biomarker for evaluating the malignant progression of laryngeal cancer. Measuring the expression of Annexin A2 as well as the expression of other Annexins, including Annexins A4 and A3, may accurately predict the prognosis of different types of cancer, including urothelial carcinoma and cervical cancer (11,25,26). The predictive efficiency of Annexin A2 combined with other Annexins in laryngeal carcinoma requires further investigation.…”

“…Previous reports have shown that CRT is up-regulated in other cancers. Close correlation between CRT expression and metastasis was observed [ 6 , 19 , 20 ], suggesting CRT is probably a pivotal molecular signal for cancer growth and progression. Yoon et al demonstrated that CRT is highly expressed in HCC patients’ samples when compared to noncarcinomatous hepatic tissues.…”

“…Lu et al identified 55 differential proteins among totally 1028 protein spots in the urine of 13 UTUC patients compared with the urine of 20 healthy control adults using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Three proteins (CALR, annexin A2 and annexin A3) were found to be essential secreting proteins in the urine from UTUC tumor tissues, suggesting their potential role as a panel of biomarkers [52]. However, the major limitations shared by these studies were their retrospective nature and small sample sizes.…”
