A Pencil-Drawn Electronic Tongue for Environmental Applications

Abstract: We report on the development of a simple and cost-effective potentiometric sensor array that is based on manual “drawing” on the polymeric support with the pencils composed of graphite and different types of zeolites. The sensor array demonstrates distinct sensitivity towards a variety of inorganic ions in aqueous media. This multisensor system has been successfully applied to quantitative analysis of 100 real-life surface waters sampled in Mahananda and Hooghly rivers in the West Bengal state (India). Partial… Show more

“…In this sense, the identification and quantification of microplastics in the marine environment have also been explored [131]. Other approaches include the development of systems for quantitative analysis of inorganic ions in aqueous media by using sensor arrays composed by graphite and zeolites to evaluate samples in rivers [132].…”

“…This fabrication method is especially explored to produce physical, chemical, and electrochemical sensors. 30,32,33 One of the challenges presented by the pencil-drawing technique is to guarantee good reproducibility in the transfer of the graphite layers, which can impact the film's conductivity and the overall performance of the electrode. Also, the transfer of the graphite film in a manual way (hand drawing) is highly dependent on the pressure applied.…”

“…Regression prediction based on multi-sensor fusion technology has been widely used in other industries, such as the remaining life prediction of aviation engines (Li et al, 2022b), tool wear prediction (Meng et al, 2021), air pollution level prediction (Ari and Alagoz, 2022), and wheel odometry prediction (Zhu et al, 2021). Kirsanov et al (2021) used PLSR to relate the sensor signals to the values of different water quality parameters, which enabled the accurate detection of various water quality parameters. Li et al (2019) has applied SVM in multi-sensor fusion to assess green tea quality accurately.…”
