In this paper we will introduce a congestion control method suitable for Carrier Ethernet Networks. Ethernet is seen as a replacement technology to ATM for provider access aggregation networks due to its cost efficiency, but it still lacks many necessary features to provide Quality of Service (QoS) as required from carrier-grade networks. This congestion control method is based on network potentials, which is a new concept to make the network traffic load aware and to implicitly prevent overload situations. Network potentials are scalar measures of the the network's ability to carry traffic of services demanding QoS. We will compare this method with explicit resource reservation methods such as budget-based network admission control methods.

Admission Control (AC) has long been considered as a key mechanism to support Quality of Service objectives in networks. There is a significant base of literature in the area of admission control algorithms, but not all of these algorithms are directly comparable in terms of inputs, outputs or objectives. Current theory does not well describe the when, where, and how to best apply AC in designing network and service infrastructure for multi-service IP networks. This tutorial takes an ontological perspective within which to categorize admission control schemes. Industrystandard architectures (both core and access networks) are used to illustrate some of the key concepts. Two tables are provided to summarize the different approaches for categorization of admission control schemes.

We compare the capacity requirements of two new end-to-end (e2e) protection switching mechanisms: the selfprotecting multipath (SPM) and several (multi-)path protection (PP) methods. Their structure consists of disjoint parallel e2e paths and the traffic is distributed over these paths according to a load balancing function. If one of the paths fails, the traffic is redistributed to the working paths according to a path failure specific load balancing function. The contribution of this work is the calculation of the path layout and the load balancing functions for both the PP and the SPM method. We use exact optimizations and simple heuristics for that objective and take a dimensioning approach to compare the capacity requirements of the different mechanisms. Our results illustrate, e.g., that the savings potential depends on the network topology and that 17% additional capacity can be sufficient for full resilience against all single router and link failures in well designed networks.
