A perspective on service orchestration

Abstract: a b s t r a c tService-oriented computing is an emerging paradigm with increasing impact on the way modern software systems are designed and developed. Services are autonomous, loosely coupled and heterogeneous computational entities able to cooperate to achieve common goals. This paper introduces a model for service orchestration, which combines a exogenous coordination model, with services' interfaces annotated with behavioural patterns specified in a process algebra which is parametric on the interaction di… Show more

“…Having a separate product and synchronisation operation enables a more fine grained analysis, which we believe was required to obtain the results presented here. Barbosa et al [8] go even further, presenting 5 operations (parallel, interleaving, hook, left join and right join). Our product merely places two connectors next to each other, without restricting their behaviour, whereas Barbosa et al's model forces a choice between parallel or interleaving composition.…”

“…In the work of Barbosa et al [32] the semantics of components are defined by the expressions of a process algebra. These expressions carry out both positive (presence) and negative (absence) information about data in ports.…”

“…In [6] the authors proposed a model in which a connector's model is decomposed into two distinct specifications: a typed binary relation to capture the flow of data, and a behavioural pattern to describe its interface. The latter amounts to a specification of which, when and under what conditions connector's ports become activated (i.e., ready to deliver or consume a datum).…”

“…The specification of connectors' behavioural patterns resorts to a process calculus parametric on the communication discipline fully developed in [15]. In [6] the same language is also used to describe component interfaces, i.e. the business protocols they implement, enabling local and global, compositional reasoning over applications.…”
