A photometric-dynamic model to simulate coma and jets from a comet

Abstract: Abstract.A model to compute the trajectories of dust grains ejected by comets to simulate intensity and polarization maps on the sky plane is presented. The model is used to constrain the silicate to organic mass ratio, porosity and size distribution of the grains in the shells and coma of comet Hale-Bopp to explain 1) the published polarizations at three continuum wavelengths at 0.6840 µm, 0.4845 µm and 0.3650 µm at different phase angles, 2) higher polarization and bluer colour of the shells compared to the … Show more

“…Details of these observations are given in Table 1. The computer simulations were carried out using the model by Vasundhara (2002) explained briefly in the following section. This model adopts the basic concepts introduced by Sekanina (1981aSekanina ( , 1981bSekanina ( , 1991.…”

“…The morphology and the chemical processes in the coma have been treated in papers relating to models (Rodgers & Charnley, 2002;Vasundhara, 2002;Kerola & Larson, 1999) and to observations in the visible spectral range (Korsun & Jockers, 2002;Morgenthaler et al, 2001).…”

“…Another puzzling observation is that of sub-micron dust grains producing a large contribution to the cross-sectional area in the coma of comet Hale-Bopp, evidenced by spectrophotometric and polarimetric observations (Woodward et al, 2000;Mason et al 2001;Vasundhara 2002).…”
