A photovoltaic system experiment in a laboratory environment

Abstract: Solar photovoltaic energy sources are rapidly gaining potential growth and popularity compared to conventional fossil fuel sources. This work presents a photovoltaic system laboratory experiment developed for engineering students to emphasize the need for enhanced renewable energy education. The experiment exposes students to photovoltaic system components, working principles, and maximum power operating point. It is designed to complement a renewable energy course. Results along with animation from the hands-… Show more

“…When the characteristic curves of the developed PVPEMs given in Figure 14 are examined; it can be easily seen that the results are similar to the I-V and P-V curves to those of commercial PV panels [4,35]. In addition, these characteristic curves and V oc and I sc values given in F I G U R E 1 0 Wiring connections used in experimental studies Table 2 are quite consistent with results given in the literature [5,9,11,22]. These results show that PVPEMs and LabVIEW block diagrams have correctly been developed and designed.…”

“…In the process of transformation from traditional energy sources to renewable energy sources, well-trained technicians and engineers are needed to carry out design, installation, distribution, maintenance, and repair services [5]. For this purpose, it is important to adapt course syllabuses and educational materials to new conditions in educational institutions that train qualified technicians and engineers [16].…”

“…The parameters studied were fresh drinking water produced, still efficiency, PV panel power production, PV panel efficiency, and exergy efficiency. Sensing the need for renewable energy education, a fully functioning solar photovoltaic laboratory model was used to demonstrate and teach engineering students the components of the system, the working principles, and the maximum power point to improve their understanding of the theoretical course on RES [47]. The experiments were designed to be used along with the theoretical renewable energy course.…”

“…Nevertheless, students sometimes are not prepared to propose new ideas for solving engineering problems because it is not an easy task that can be learned only following predefined laboratory exercises. For instance, there are excellent laboratories designed to learn renewable energy systems 42 that is a critical topic. However, the undergraduate students are not motivated to develop solutions in renewable energy in this course.…”
