A Piezoelectric‐Driven Rock‐Drilling Device for Extraterrestrial Subsurface Exploration

Abstract: The rocks on extraterrestrial objects contain plenty of original geological and biological information. Drilling and sampling are an essential task in lunar exploration or future explorations of other planets like mars. Due to the limitation of payloads, energies, and drill pressure, the investigation of a lightweight and low-powered rock-drilling device is crucial for explorations of distant celestial bodies. The ultrasonic drill driven by piezoelectric ceramics is a new drilling device that can adapt to the … Show more

“…The aspect of focused and flexible coupling of energy, in turn, is addressed by ultrasonic processes. Although complex process control is necessary, demonstrators proved the general feasibility and practicability [58][59][60][61][62]. In fact, drilling systems considering the tool, the tool guidance and the machine technology, are available for surface area applications and as deep drilling units up to TRL 6 [57].…”

“…The above study shows that ultrasonic percussive drills can achieve superior drilling effects under low-power conditions. However, the mechanism of rock failure is not clear, which limits the application of these drills in practical drilling projects [13,14].…”
