“…Earlier studies linking 5-HTTLPR with impulsiveness have focused on special target groups, e.g., a higher prevalence of the S allele was found in impulsive suicide attempters (Baca-Garcia et al 2005) and in violent type 2 alcoholics (Hallikainen et al 1999). Our study was carried out on a population-based sample of adolescents.…”

“…A total of 18 manuscripts and 1 poster presentation published between 1997 and 2007 were included in this meta-analysis [Billett et al, 1997;McDougle et al, 1998;Ohara et al, 1998;Bengel et al, 1999;Frisch et al, 2000;Kinnear et al, 2000;Camarena et al, 2001;Di Bella et al, 2002;Chabane et al, 2004;Meira-Lima et al, 2004;Walitza et al, 2004;Baca-Garcia et al, 2005;Kim et al, 2005;Denys et al, 2006;Hu et al, 2006;Perez et al, 2006;Dickel et al, 2007;Lin, 2007;Miguita et al, 2007;Wendland et al, in press]. These manuscripts included 16 case-control studies including 1,797 OCD cases and 3,786 healthy controls and 6 familybased association studies including 486 trios cases.…”

“…The results of stratified meta-analysis by age became non-significant when either of the two studies involving children were removed from the analysis. The significant association between the l allele and OCD case status observed among Caucasians did not remain when the two studies failing to satisfy Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium or when 8 of the 15 contributing studies were individually removed from the meta-analysis [McDougle et al, 1998;Bengel et al, 1999;Chabane et al, 2004;Meira-Lima et al, 2004;Baca-Garcia et al, 2005;Hu et al, 2006;Dickel et al, 2007]. The significant association between the l allele and OCD case status observed in family-based association studies did not remain when five of six of the contributing studies were removed [McDougle et al, 1998;Chabane et al, 2004;Walitza et al, 2004;Hu et al, 2006;Dickel et al, 2007].…”

“…An explanation for this discrepant data and the gender-specific effect might be that intermediate links between alcohol dependence and suicidal behaviour may involve different genetic factors in men and women. A recent study investigating the 5-HTTLPR in the continuum between compulsivity and impulsivity in females observed that the frequency of S-individuals (either homo-or heterozygotic) was low in patients with OCD, intermediate in non-impulsive controls and higher (82%) in impulsive suicide attempters 92 and thus it was suggested that genetic variants may be related more likely to behavioural dimensions instead of to specific psychiatric disorders.…”
