A planar UWB MIMO antenna with gain enhancement and isolation improvement for the 5G Mobile platform

Abstract: A planar ultra‐wide band (UWB) multi‐input multi‐output (MIMO) antenna with gain enhancement and isolation improvement for the 5G mobile platform is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of two planar UWB low‐band antenna elements: a compact multi‐loop antenna and a ground‐slotted planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) located on the opposite side of the rectangular ground plane. These two antennas satisfy the 10‐dB return loss bandwidth from 2.90 to 6.94 GHz for multi‐loop antenna and from 2.79 to 7.23 GHz for sl… Show more

“…NB Antenna #1 is fed by Port #2 (P2). It has an interdigital capacitor to achieve low-frequency operation, near the 3 GHz band, and impedance matching [30]. The position of NB Antenna #1 is chosen preferentially because it operates at the lowest frequency and is the longest of the three NB antennas.…”

“…Because the UWB antenna is an electric dipole type, the resonances on the UWB antenna are mainly determined by the vertical length of the ground plane [30]. Due to the orthogonal current modes from the ground plane, high isolation characteristics can be achieved without applying any additional decoupling structures in this design.…”

“…The audio/video streams, such as those in high-definition television, require 1 Gbps transmission. To improve the channel capacity, as in 5 G 2 of 12 technology, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is a good choice that can offer massive data transmission rates [17]. MIMO is a multiplexing technology that utilizes multiple antennas at both receiver and transmitter ends resulting in improved communication performance at both ends [18].…”

“…MIMO antennas have been designed to improve their characteristics in terms of impedance bandwidth, miniaturisation and isolation. Several decoupling techniques are used in MIMO antennas to improve isolation and diversity performance [1][2][3][4][5]. For size miniaturisation, a Yagishaped antenna is designed with better FBR [6].…”
