A playground activity as an analogy of electric current to help students overcome misconceptions about electricity

Abstract: In this study, which aims to help grade nine students overcome the misconceptions about electric current, we identified their misconceptions about this concept and then designed and implemented a playground activity as an analogy of electric current. Through the conceptual change texts approach, which we have enhanced with experience, we use this analogy to explain the scientific conception of electric current. We call the approach resulting from this combination: the Conceptual Change Text Enhanced by Experim… Show more

“…Both techniques can be implemented in order to study the electrical response of linear or nonlinear devices of practical interest in many fields of scientific research. Teaching of physics is essential for cumulative improvement in physics instruction, as well as for the extension of the quantitative methods of physics to other scientific fields, like medicine and biology [12,[16][17][18][19]. Finally, future work will be dedicated to carry out statistical studies in the presence of the students.…”

“…Based on prior studies [1,4,6], we have developed a test of conceptual comprehension. While this test does not reveal all misconceptions about light waves, it does identify some that are a barrier to future educational opportunities.…”

“…One of the primary objectives of physics education is to develop a scientifically accurate understanding of the fundamentals of the discipline [1]. Nonetheless, concerning the fundamental concepts of light waves, multiple studies have revealed that even excellent students do not understand them correctly [2,3].…”

“…Yet the majority of students do not have this kind of understanding [1]. This is partly due to traditional teaching methods, which do not help students to develop an appropriate understanding of physical concepts [2,3], including the role of slits in the formation of the diffraction pattern [1].…”
