A Polish adaptation of Monika Ardelt’s Three-Dimensional Wisdom Scale (3D-WS)

Abstract: The article outlines the results of academic endeavors to develop a Polish adaptation of Monika Ardelt's Three-Dimensional Wisdom Scale (3D-WS). The results obtained using the Polish version are comparable to those obtained using the original research instrument, which proves that the Polish 3D-WS can be successfully used for research purposes. The Polish adaptation consists of 39 items covering four dimensions: Cognitive, Affective, Self-Awareness, and Empathic. The scale testing procedure involved a research… Show more

“…The second group was early adulthood (n ¼ 115; 47 women and 68 men) aged 19 to 39 years (M ¼ 6.80, SD ¼ 5.46). The third group was midadult (n ¼ 149; 63 women and 86 men) aged 40 to 58 years Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with parceling was used (Bandalos, 2002;Bandalos & Finney, 2001;Steuden, Brudek, & Izdebski, 2016). The accepted statistical approach demands the fulfillment of the assumptions of one dimension of the analyzed factors (Williams & O'Boyle, 2008).…”

“…The third, compassion dimension corresponds to the individual's capacity for sympathy and empathy; it is associated with striving to enhance well-being and overcome egocentric tendencies. It also indicates the presence of positive emotions and benevolence toward other people (sample item: I can be comfortable with all kinds of people; Ardelt, 2003; see Steuden, Brudek, & Izdebski, 2016). Summing up points for the items belonging to particular dimensions, raw scores are obtained for each of the components of wisdom.…”

“…Moreover, the tool correlates positively with the indicators of good adaptation and negatively with the indicators of nonadaptation, which attests to its accuracy. In the presented research project, the Polish version of the tool was used, translated and adapted by Steuden, Brudek, & Izdebski, 2016. Internal coherence was tested for the entire Polish version of the scale (a ¼ .84) and for its particular dimensions (compassion: a ¼ .64, reflection: a ¼ .74, cognition: a ¼ .77) using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and concluding that it is satisfactory.…”
