Dendrimers are presently one of the most intensely studied classes of compounds because of their unusual structure. They can be described as a jungle of entangled branches traversed by winding trails which lead to sweet fruits and bright blossoms. On these trails one can reach the thicket's interior as well as find a way out. Expressed less lyrically, this thicket stands for regularly branched, densely packed structures, and the trails represent voids and channels not filled by bent back branches but by solvent. The fruit and blossoms are photochemically, electrochemically, or synthetically addressable units, catalytically active sites, etc., and the back and forth on the trails stands for transport processes. In a mathematical sense dendrimers are enveloped by an interface, which defines what is either in or out. This interface is shaped like a sphere if the trails are filled to bursting. Otherwise dendrimers are more flattened like amoeba, especially if in contact with a surface. The high density of the functional groups, the expansion of these compounds to a range of several nanometers, the existence of usable "surface" and transport possibilities in and with them have made dendrimers interesting candidates for many applications. This review describes how dendrimer construction and polymer synthesis were combined and used to move from fully or flattened spherical shapes to cylindrical ones. The shape-inducing influence of dendritic substituents can be driven to create nanoobjects with a cylindrical shape, which not only considerably widens the range of applications for the dendrimer class but also opens up new perspectives for supramolecular and polymer chemistry. Because of the sheer size of the described objects and complexity of shape-related properties, research in this area must necessarily be interdisciplinary. This article tries to mirror this by giving special attention not only to synthesis but also the characterization and behavior of these compounds in bulk and at interfaces. Furthermore, potential application fields are described.

Dendrimere gehören zu den derzeit am intensivsten bearbeiteten Verbindungsklassen. Dies hängt mit ihrer außergewöhnlichen Struktur zusammen, die man als einen Urwald aus ineinander verschlungenem Astwerk beschreiben kann, in dem es gewundene Pfade zu süßen Früchten und leuchtenden Blüten gibt, auf denen man aber auch in das Dickicht hinein und wieder hinaus in die Freiheit gelangen kann. Weniger lyrisch ausgedrückt stehen das Dickicht für regelmäßig verzweigte, dicht gepackte Strukturen; die Pfade für Hohlräume, die nicht durch zurückgefaltete Astfragmente, sondern mit Solvens ausgefüllt sind; die Früchte und Blüten für photochemisch, elektrochemisch oder synthetisch‐chemisch adressierbare Einheiten, katalytisch aktive Stellen etc. und das Hinein‐und‐heraus für Transportvorgänge. Im mathematischen Sinne sind Dendrimere von einer Grenzfläche umhüllt, die definiert, was Innen und Außen ist. Diese Umhüllende hat bei prall gefüllten Pfaden Kugelgestalt, ansonsten sind Dendrimere eher amöbenähnlich abgeflacht, was insbesondere dann ausgeprägt ist, wenn sie in Wechselwirkung mit einer Oberfläche stehen. Die hohe Beladung mit funktionellen Gruppen, die Ausdehnung dieser Verbindungen bis in den Bereich mehrerer Nanometer, die Existenz einer nutzbaren „Oberfläche”︁ und die Transportmöglichkeiten in und mit ihnen machen Dendrimere interessant für vielfältige Anwendungen. Dieser Aufsatz beschreibt, wie das Bauprinzip der Dendrimere in Kombination mit der Polymersynthese genutzt werden kann, um von sphärischen oder abgeflacht‐sphärischen Strukturen zu solchen mit zylindrischer Gestalt (Umhüllenden) zu gelangen. Der gestaltgebende Einfluss dendritischer Substituenten kann dabei soweit getrieben werden, dass Nanoobjekte mit zylindrischer Form entstehen. Hierdurch wird nicht nur das Anwendungsspektrum der Dendrimere erheblich erweitert, sondern es werden auch neue Perspektiven für die Supramolekulare Chemie und die Polymerchemie eröffnet. Bedingt durch die schiere Größe der beschriebenen Objekte und die Komplexität der mit ihrer Gestalt zusammenhängenden Eigenschaften muss die Forschung auf dem Gebiet der dendronisierten Polymere interdisziplinär angelegt sein. Der vorliegende Beitrag geht daher neben der Synthese auch intensiv auf die Charakterisierung dieser Stoffklasse und ihr Verhalten in Substanz sowie an Grenzflächen ein. Darüber hinaus werden potentielle Anwendungen aufgezeigt.

Branched polystyrene macromonomers were synthesized by the slow addition of a stoichiometric amount of either 4‐(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene or vinylbenzyl chloride as a coupling agent to living polystyryllithium. Star‐shaped macromonomers were produced by the addition of the coupling agent alone, and hyperbranched macromonomers resulted from the addition of the coupling agent along with styrene monomer. Star and hyperbranched graft copolymers were produced by the copolymerization of the macromonomers with styrene and methyl methacrylate. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography coupled with multi‐angle laser light scattering, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and Soxhlet extraction to determine that the macromonomers were incorporated in high yields into the copolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
