A Polygeneration System Based on Desiccant Air Conditioning Coupled with an Electrical Storage

Abstract: This study presents an extension of a previous paper recently published by the authors. In particular, the current paper focuses on adding electrical storage to a polygeneration system developed for residential applications. Different from the previous work, it aims to design an off-grid facility. The polygeneration plant provides electricity, space heating and cooling, domestic hot water, and freshwater for a single-family dwelling in Almería, Spain. The main system technologies are photovoltaic/thermal colle… Show more

“…The 100% RES solution (that is, not using an energy balance with the grid and using (or not using) energy storage systems, ESS) has not been included here for economic reasons. Still, the authors have also studied it for an isolated domestic dwelling [54,55]. In these analyses, the polygeneration configuration only includes PVT panels, the RO being the desalination technique but including the desiccant wheel (SDW) as the cooling system.…”

“…The order of best integrations in terms of viability remains consistent, as B-C-A-D. While the analysis did not include a 100% RES solution (without the grid-net energy balance and energy storage systems), the authors studied the influence of using or not using batteries for an isolated domestic dwelling in separate analyses [58]. In these cases, the polygeneration only included PVT panels and RO for desalination and the inclusion of a solid desiccant wheel (SDW) to cool the house, which was also thermally activated.…”

“…Although water tanks are the most well-known and widely used solution in sensible heat storage [8], it is possible to use phase change materials (PCMs) to store thermal energy. PCMs allow for the storage of large amounts of heat at an almost constant temperature while undergoing phase transition [9].…”

“…Gesteira et al [9] carried out a study where they assessed a polygeneration system used to provide space heating and cooling, electrical energy, and fresh and hot domestic hot water for a single-family dwelling in Spain. The system is based on photovoltaic-thermal solar collectors.…”
