A Polymer Blend Substrate for Skeletal Muscle Cells Alignment and Photostimulation

Abstract: Substrate engineering for steering cell growth is a wide and well‐established area of research in the field of modern biotechnology. Here we introduce a micromachining technique to pattern an inert and transparent polymer matrix blended with a photoactive polymer. We demonstrate that the obtained scaffold combines the capability to align with that to photostimulate living cells. This technology can open up new and promising applications, especially where cell alignment is required to trigger specific biologica… Show more

“…Capacitance measurements were performed as previously described. 49 , 61 Briefly, a double sinusoidal voltage clamp signal was applied to the cell in whole-cell configuration. The response current signal was acquired, and membrane capacitance and resistance were extracted fitting the current with a custom MATLAB program.…”

“…The use of organic electronic devices in bioelectronics has seen a steep rise in the last couple of decades. One of the most important reasons is that organic semiconductors share many common features with biological matter, such as softness (i.e., in terms of supramolecular interaction and charge transport) and mixed ionic–electronic conduction . In addition, these materials exhibit superior biocompatibility, conformability, and cost-effectiveness compared to their inorganic counterparts.…”
